IN THE WINDOW

Fwoggies go a Courtin'

Window Installation by Kimberley Howe

This display will be part of multiple small performances of The Kissing Booth as part of Culture Days on Saturday, Sept. 27th from 3-4:30pm, at Cottage C, at the Humber Lakeshore Campus. It's the story of the life of the Princess (from The Frog Prince), taking advantage of her power to turn cursed frogs back into princes by kissing them. It was designed by Kim, and was built by Kim and her talented friend Eva Nitsch. The frog and princess puppets were created based on templates taken from Fun With Paper Puppets, Roy Laming, 1978, Kaye & Ward Ltd.

About the creator:
After completing the Humber Puppetry Intensive earlier this year, Kimberley had caught the puppetry bug! She has been teaching puppet making workshops for children, puppeteering in parades, making all manner of puppets, and performing ever since.

The PRINCESS would love to have you participate in this window so she gets more kisses!

Just download the PDF by clicking on the image shown to the left or pick up a print-out at Open Door Designs (remember we're closed until September 11th), print on paper or card stock and assemble.

Bring them to Open Door Designs and we'll add your FWOGS
to the line up!
This pattern was taken from Fun With Paper Puppets, Roy Laming, 1978, Kaye & Ward Ltd.
OPEN DOOR DESIGNS will be closed on the following dates:

• Tuesday,September 2-10, 2014 incl and reopening on Thursday September 11th.

Friend & Neighbour Tatiana Jennings is producing another show right in the Neighbourhood!
Richard the III, the Pleasures of Violence.
Controversial, disturbing and visually stunning interpretation of RICHARD III created by Tatiana Jennings & KADOZÜKÉ - one of Toronto's most innovative ensembles. The company, celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year, made Junction Triangle it’s permanent home. Sharing the space with the art gallery/printing house IMAGEFOUNDRY the company stages it’s innovative and elaborately designed shows in a beautiful studio space and various site-specific locations. Richard III, The Pleasures of Violence is a result of 2 years of exploration into the truth and fiction behind the story of Richard III - England’s favorite villain King. Serendipitously, midway into the rehearsals the body of Richard III was found during the excavation of the car park in Leicester, England. While using the text of Shakespeare play Tatiana and the ensemble reimagine the story focusing on the intimate, personal relationship of 3 York brothers and the members of their household. The show opens on September 10th and will run to September 28th at 1581 Dupont st. Toronto.

Tickets could be purchased at www.zuke.ca. If you would like to support the show, please visit our indiegogo fundraising campaign.

Workshop Description
This one-day workshop will introduce participants to one of the traditional craft methods of mold making, which has been used for centuries to produce marionettes, hand puppets, masks etc. In this workshop, participants will learn how to take their own sculpted form, make a mold and lay it up with papier-mâché. MORE INFO

TOMORROW WE DISAPPEAR

Tomorrow We Disappear is a feature documentary about the Kathputli Colony, India's last home to magicians, acrobats, and puppeteers.

For half a century 2,800 artist families have called its narrow alleyways home; there are jugglers and acrobats, puppeteers and painters, folk singers and magicians, many of whom are well-respected artists in India and abroad.
In 2009 the New Delhi government sold Kathputli to developers for a fraction of its worth. The land is to be bulldozed to make room for the city’s first-ever skyscraper, The Raheja Phoenix.

Puran Bhatt learned puppetry from his late father, Manoram, the first president of the Kathputli Colony. Puran grew up to become one of India’s most talented puppeteers. He’s traveled to over 25 countries to perform his puppet acts, and in 2003 the president of India awarded him the prestigious National Award for traditional arts. But as plans for the colony’s redevelopment are unveiled, Puran sets to work fighting the government’s scheme. He writes letters to the government, marches a giant protest parade with 15-foot puppets through the busy streets of Delhi, and argues with poorer members of the community who want to sign away the rights to the Kathputli land in the hopes of getting allotted flats. Professor Brian Davey is an expert in the story of puppetry – as is Alison, his wife and partner in the world of miniature theatre, strings, glove-persona and beach-booths. The pair are among the busiest Punch and Judy operators in the country and their knowledge and skills are much in demand.
When they’re not out on punishing tours of summer shows, Brian is making puppets and Alison is designing and sewing up costumes in their East Devon home. She also sits down occasionally to write new shows which include all manner of fantastical characters.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old sweaters

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.

Image Foundry specializes in edition printing, custom art reproduction projects, and high-end photo-retouching work.
