LEARN TO MAKE A FABULOUS MUPPET-STYLE PUPPET WITH KIMBERLEY HOWE see more

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

MAKE A MUPPETY PUPPET IN FOUR TWO-HOUR SESSIONS

In this Fur and Foam Workshop, Kim teaches how to use simple templates to construct professional fur and foam puppets. Puppet construction emphasizes character creation, teaching the students to consider how the colour, shape, and location of features such as eyes, noses, mouths, teeth, ears, and hair make a puppet what it is.

Building skills acquired include how to work with upholstery foam, how to stitch using both a sewing machine (assisted use) and specific hand stitches, and how to create various mouth plates. Students are also taught basic puppeteering techniques including character animation and creating a voice.

Each puppeteer will receive a personalized puppet certificate upon completion.

Workshop Description
This one-day workshop will introduce participants to one of the traditional craft methods of mold making, which has been used for centuries to produce marionettes, hand puppets, masks etc. This valuable technology should be in every puppet builder's portfolio.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to take their own sculpted form, make a mold and lay it up with papier-mâché. Because of drying times participants will learn the assembly process, finishing and painting on a pre-molded form prepared by Alexander.

The maker of this puppet, Tengu Hisa was born in 1858 and died in 1943. It seems that he was one of the earliest and among the important bunraku artists of the late Edo period.
There is a Museum in Tokushima featuring some of his puppets.

anna & elizabeth started making crankies and shadow puppets together. Unlike anything you’ve seen, works of art that have been heralded in folk festivals from Seattle to Chicago, from deep in the mountains of Kentucky to Uzbekistan. The pair is reviving a lost art.
THEIR SHOW is a captivating mix of ballads, foot-stomping dance tunes, stories. MORE

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old sweaters

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.
