Telling
Stories
“This year, the festival’s Telling
Stories theme has inspired a story writing competition
and a youth production”, says Noreen Young, Puppets
Up! Artistic Director. ”We are going to take the winning
children’s stories and fashion them into a puppet
production to be presented at the festival by a youth troupe
comprised of eight local Mississippi Mills and Carleton
Place children”.
The Puppets Up! story writing competition is open to children
ages 8 to 15 and submissions are due by April 30, 2009.
Within 1,000 words, entrants will be asked to write a story
involving a bookworm and a kid (boy or girl). A panel of
local authors, booksellers, librarians and artists will
judge the results.
The top three competition winners will join Nick, the festival
mascot, in the daily festival parade on both August 8 and
9. They'll earn prizes in the amounts of $100, $75 and $50
as well. More

You
are invited to attend a lively discussion about how we
define our neighbourhood on Wednesday, May 13 at 7p.m.
at the Perth Avenue Housing Cooperative (120 Perth). Local
history buff Michael Monastyrskyj will show some old photos,
and Urban Planner Beate Bowron will speak about neighbourhood
identities. A Q&A will follow. All are welcome to
attend this free event.
For details, contact us by email or call Kevin at 416-537-1128.

As in those days, nobody really knows what to call our
community. A number of different names have been used
since Shedden Farms became a neighbourhood in 1887.
Some local residents have formed a group called Fuzzy
Boundaries to initiate a naming process for the area.
