Kelly
Kirkham is a puppet maker and puppeteer, illustrator and artist
in Toronto, Ontario. She has been a puppet maker since 2001, when,
after not being able to find a particular sort of old fashioned
hand puppet, decided to make one herself. Her line of papier mache
hand puppets with soft cloth bodies soon grew to include finger
puppets, rod puppets and marionettes. Most of her puppets are
animals, with particular favourites being rabbits, foxes and gazelles.
Kelly has found that her travels to Florence, Italy, through the
Ontario College of Art and Designs Florence Program, were particularly
influential in her later foray into puppetry. She has also found
much inspiration and support here in Toronto’s growing puppet
community. Kelly is an active member of the Toronto based puppet
company Unraku, and enjoys both performing and building puppets
with them. Previously operating under the name Kirkham Puppets,
she has brought together her puppets, illustration and art under
the name Run Rabbit Run.

WORKSHOP
DESCRIPTION
Through
the use of common materials, participants will learn how to
create their very own papier mâché hand puppet.
Participants will first learn how to design and construct a
puppet's head from papier-mâché for comfort and
durability. Then, choosing from a selection of premade puppet
heads supplied by artist Kelly Kirkham, you will learn how to
paint,
dress
and embellish your chosen puppet in a beautiful and expressive
way. Each participant leaves the workshop
with two puppets, one to be finished at home and one completed
by the end of the day.

MARCH
2009

"I loved the workshop. I thought it was really useful and
practical. I loved that I was able to make something that I'll
be able to use in my work with children. The workshop was a ideal
length - we had enough time to complete our projects but also
went home good and tired. There was ample opportunity to ask questions
and get practical advice from Kelly."
"The
workshop was wonderful. Very relaxed, yet informative at the same
time. The time just flew by! " |
