Charlotte is still in the window waiting to hear from the War Museum in Ottawa...
She was made by Charles Laidlaw for his daughter Connie, a student at Runnymede Collegiate in Toronto who at the age of 16 performed for the troops during the second world war in the all-girl troupe: The Victory Entertainers. She was donated to Open Door Designs by Kay Westlake who also performed in the group. Charlotte will be added to the collection at the National War Museum soon.

The group, Connie Laidlaw, Kay Westlake, Phyllis Moore and Eva Elliott performed over 300 army camp shows in Canada and the U.S. during the war. A great piece of Canadian history and a fabulous example of Girl Power!

Puppet Allsorts is regathering...some news

After selling out usually a week ahead of time for 2012-13 season we are busy looking for a larger venue and starting to confirm the acts for the new season. If anyone has an idea for a venue seating at least 75 bottoms but with a "small room" feel in the Junction area please let us know (email us). We have a few leads but any suggestions are welcome.

We will also be posting an Intern position soon to assist us in the 2013-14 season. The position would be Assistant to the Artistic Director and duties run the gamut from poster design to social media and marketing - if you or anyone you know might be interested please (email us).

Anybody interested in volunteering please contact us too.

STAY TUNED FOR MORE SOON.

Marcus Sampaio came into the store last year...I finally took a look at the company where he is production designer, A RODA. This company operates out Salvador-Bahia in Brasil. You need your vegetables....the story of Mr. Turnip...
During the early 50's Joy Laurey was offered an opportunity to make a puppet character for a one-off television show called "Whirligig". She made a puppet based on a vegetable, and it was named "Mr Turnip". The pilot show proved so successful that it went on to run for over 6 years and Mr Turnip was one of the very first television puppets ever to become a celebrity in his own right. Mr Turnip was so popular in his day that there was great demand for Mr Turnip toys, dolls, games and even toiletries such as Mr Turnip soap. More here.

A couple of recent restoration projects:

BEFORE
You can guess what happened to this very old teddy!
AFTER

This Pelham "Mother Dragon" had to be completely restored. We replaced a broken fin, restrung the body, created a new controller and restrung the strings.

These puppets were brought into the store recenlty. I believe they are German, 19thC - most of the costumes are not original but the carving is beautiful. Again, if anyone knows anything about them or would like to purchase them please let me know (I do not have them on site so will have to arrange connection. info@opendoordesigns.ca)

Our neighbourhood now has a traffic plan and the city is asking for input. Please take a look at the proposal and respond with any of your concerns.

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE: DONATIONS NEEDED:
fabric, wool, embroidery floss, needles, crochet hooks, old sweaters

RED WAGON COLLECTIVE was formed in 2006 in response to our desire to deepen our artistic, collaborative, and community-engaged practices through residency projects that would enable us to develop both intensive and extensive relationships in the Junction - a rapidly changing neighbourhood in Toronto's west end. We share a desire to work collaboratively with artists and non-artists to create work that inspires new conversations; softens boundaries between groups separated by age, culture, ability, and economic status; promotes the presence of art in everyday life and contributes to increasing public engagement in community development. The work we create with communities is used in producing exhibitions, public installations, and celebratory performance events. We are currently working within the walls of the Evangeline Shelter.

Image Foundry specializes in edition printing, custom art reproduction projects, and high-end photo-retouching work.
